About FilterKilter

Tech specs, sorted. A data-driven laptop buying guide with no listicle fluff.

FilterKilter helps you pick a laptop that actually fits what you’ll run on it — the specific programs and games you care about — instead of a generic “best of” ranking that ignores your workload.

Our mission

Most “best laptop” articles rank devices on vibes, brand loyalty, or whatever unit a manufacturer shipped to a reviewer that quarter. We think readers deserve something more honest: a transparent, repeatable ranking driven by the specs on the box and the requirements of the software you intend to run.

How product links work

FilterKilter helps readers compare laptops using structured specifications, price snapshots, availability, and use-case fit. On our buying guides, the product image and the retailer button for each pick link out to the manufacturer or retailer page where you can review the final configuration and complete the purchase.

When those links are affiliate links, FilterKilter may earn a commission if you click and make a qualifying purchase, at no additional cost to you. Affiliate commissions never influence our rankings, scores, or product placement — the ranking engine runs against the same spec database whether a given retailer has an affiliate program or not.

Example pick

Dell 15 Laptop (DC15255)

AMD Ryzen 3 7320U8 GB RAM512 GB SSD15.6" FHD

This card is illustrative. On a real buying guide, the image, product name, and retailer button each link to the same vetted retailer page for that specific configuration. Specs, price, and availability are snapshots and may have changed — always confirm on the retailer’s site before buying.

How our rankings work

Every guide on this site is generated the same way:

  1. We maintain a database of current laptop listings pulled from major manufacturers (Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and others) with their specs, prices, and availability.
  2. For each guide, we filter that catalog by the constraints that matter for its use case — price range, form factor, screen size, workload, etc.
  3. We score each remaining laptop against the official system requirements of the programs or games the guide targets. CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage each contribute to the score, and no single strong component can fully mask a weak one.
  4. The top-ranked laptops become the guide. Rankings are refreshed on a rolling schedule as prices, availability, and new models change.

See the How To page for a visitor-oriented walkthrough.

We are data-driven, not hands-on

We do not physically test every laptop we list. Rankings are based on publisher-reported specifications, retailer pricing snapshots, and the published minimum and recommended requirements of the software we score against. This approach lets us cover thousands of configurations at a cadence no hands-on outlet can match — but it also means you should always confirm the exact configuration and final price on the retailer’s site before buying.

Transparency and editorial independence

FilterKilter is reader-supported through affiliate commissions. When you click a “View on Amazon” or similar retailer link and make a qualifying purchase, we may earn a small fee at no additional cost to you.

Those commissions do not influence rankings. Concretely:

  • No retailer or manufacturer pays us for inclusion or placement.
  • We do not accept sponsored posts or pay-to-play editorial.
  • We’ll rank a great laptop in the #1 slot even when the retailer selling it has no affiliate program we participate in — we just won’t earn anything when you buy it.
