Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about how FilterKilter works, where our data comes from, and how we make money.

What is FilterKilter?

FilterKilter is a laptop buying-guide site focused on real-world fit for the software and games you actually use. Instead of generic “best of” lists, we score each laptop against the system requirements of specific programs and titles so you can see at a glance which machines will run what you care about.

How do you pick the laptops in each guide?

We pull current model data from major manufacturers (Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and others), filter by the price range and use case of the guide, and rank the results using a compatibility score built from CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage specs. We do not accept payment for inclusion or ranking.

How is the compatibility score calculated?

For each program or game, we compare a laptop’s CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage against the publisher’s minimum and recommended requirements. The score is a weighted blend of those four factors, capped so a single weak component cannot be masked by strong ones elsewhere. Higher scores mean a better fit, not a guarantee of performance — thermals, drivers, and settings still matter.

How often is the data updated?

Product listings and prices are refreshed on a regular cadence from retailer and manufacturer sources. Individual guides are regenerated when underlying data changes. You may still occasionally see a stale price — always confirm the final price on the retailer’s site before buying.

Do you make money from the links on this site?

Yes. FilterKilter participates in affiliate programs including the Amazon Associates Program. When you click an outbound link and complete a qualifying purchase, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. Commissions do not influence our rankings. See our Affiliate Disclosure for full details.

Do I need an account to use FilterKilter?

No. Browsing guides, comparing laptops, and using the filters are all available without an account.

How do I report a bug, bad data, or a missing laptop?

Click Feedback in the top navigation. You can send a note anonymously or include your email if you’d like a reply. Reports about incorrect specs, broken links, or missing models are especially appreciated.

Why does a laptop I saw yesterday no longer appear?

Models can drop out of a guide when they go out of stock, when the price moves outside the guide’s range, or when a newer revision replaces them. If you think a model was removed in error, let us know via the Feedback link.

Can I suggest a new guide or program to add?

Absolutely. Use the Feedback form and tell us which software title, game, or price range you’d like covered. Requests that match what other readers are asking for get prioritized.
