How Much Laptop You Actually Need in 2026

We compiled the official system requirements of 139 popular apps and games. 94% now recommend at least 8 GB of RAM, and 44% expect 16 GB — yet most budget laptops still ship with 8 GB. Here is what the software you run actually demands.

1. The 16GB line: where the floor moved

For a decade, 8 GB was the comfortable default for a mainstream laptop. Our data shows that floor is now the ceiling for a shrinking share of software. Of the 139 programs we analyzed, 131 (94%) recommend at least 8 GB of RAM — but 61 of them (44%) recommend 16 GB or more. Only 12 programs (about 9%) reach for 32 GB and above.

The practical problem is the mismatch at the budget tier. A large share of laptops under roughly $600 still ship with 8 GB soldered to the board. Buy one of those today and you are already below the recommended bar for nearly half the popular software catalog — and on machines with non-upgradeable memory, you cannot fix it later. 16 GB has quietly become the new safe default, not a power-user upgrade.

It is also where the cliff is steepest. Almost nothing in our dataset recommends the odd amounts in between: 12 GB appears for just 7 programs, and 6 GB for one. The market has effectively standardized on two numbers — 8 and 16 — and the share at 16 is the one that is growing.

2. Creative software out-demands games

Gaming laptops get the heavy-hardware reputation, but the most RAM-hungry category in our data is not gaming — it is creative software. Creative apps (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, Blender and peers) recommend 18.8 GB of RAM on average, versus 12.9 GB for games. Developer tooling sits in between at 16.0 GB.

The intuition makes sense once you separate RAM from graphics. A game leans hard on the GPU but is shipped, optimized, and QA’d against a fixed memory budget. A video editor or 3D scene scales with your project — more layers, more tracks, higher-resolution assets — so publishers quote higher memory headroom. If you edit video or render 3D, a “gaming” laptop’s RAM may matter more to you than its frame rate.

3. The dedicated-GPU majority

A discrete graphics card used to be a gamer’s line item. In our dataset it is now the majority case: 75 of 139 programs (54%) recommend a dedicated GPU. Among the 83 programs that publish a specific VRAM figure, the average recommended video memory is 5.4 GB — comfortably past the point where the 4 GB cards common in entry-level machines start to constrain you.

That has a direct buying consequence: integrated graphics, the default on thin-and-light and most sub-$700 laptops, is being quietly left behind by more than half the popular software catalog. It does not mean everyone needs a discrete GPU — plenty of business and writing tools never ask for one — but it does mean “will integrated graphics be enough?” is now a real question to answer per use case, not a safe assumption.

4. Requirements by category

Averages across the five categories we track, computed on each program’s recommended tier. VRAM is averaged only over programs in a category that publish a figure; business tools generally do not.

Gaming is the largest category in the dataset (65 titles), which is why the overall averages track gaming more closely than the category-level numbers above.

5. The machine that runs everything

As a thought experiment, what would it take to run all 139 programs at their recommended specs at once? Taking the maximum of every requirement across the dataset (and summing storage, since each program needs its own disk space):

No real buyer needs that machine — it is the union of every worst case. The useful takeaway is the opposite: your requirement is the maximum of the handful of programs you actually run, not the catalog-wide ceiling. A writer who runs Microsoft 365 and Chrome needs a fraction of what a 3D artist running Blender and Premiere does. That is exactly the gap our recommender is built to close.

Your software isn’t the average

6. Methodology

This study analyzes the published system requirements of 139 apps and games that FilterKilter scores laptops against. The figures here are computed directly from that requirements database; nothing is estimated or modeled.

  • Sources. Requirements come from each publisher’s official documentation — Steam store pages, Adobe Creative Cloud requirements, Autodesk and Microsoft product pages, and developer-tool docs. We do not invent or adjust requirements.
  • Tier used. Unless stated otherwise, figures use the recommended tier. Where a publisher lists only one tier, we treat it as both minimum and recommended.
  • Coverage. RAM and core counts are published for essentially every program. GPU VRAM is specified for 83 of 139; VRAM averages are taken only over programs that publish a figure, so they are not diluted by tools that never ask for a discrete GPU.
  • Categories. Each program is assigned one category (gaming, creative, developer, business, education). Gaming is the largest at 65 titles, which skews the catalog-wide averages toward gaming norms.
  • Reproducibility. Every number is regenerated by an open script over the published dataset. If publishers revise their requirements, the figures will move with them on the next refresh.
